Over the winter months, our vessel “Reminder” is available on Maldon Quay as a floating cottage for up to 14 guests.

We have had a variety of different groups from three families with young children who usually camp together; a group of ten year olds (with parent) celebrating a birthday in an unusual way; ten chaps on a stag weekend; and many more.

One winter booking was for a lady celebrating her 30th birthday. She had never been to Maldon before and was a keen walker and photographer. She was joined by her partner and three other couples on the Friday evening, a roaring fire welcomed them in the saloon before they popped over to the Queens Head on the Quay for a relaxing drink and meal.

Saturday morning after breakfast was spent sitting on deck admiring the birds a few feet away, including Egrets, Shell Duck, Geese and many small waders. Then it was a hard decision to choose where to walk for the afternoon – there are many options from Maldon for sea wall walking, with fantastic light, wide landscapes and of course the winter birds. In the end they chose to walk behind Northea Island, owned by the RSPB and towards Mayland Creek where they could catch sight of the seals at the entrance to Lawling Creek.

Sunday morning was a relaxed affair after a cooked breakfast, and then the group headed off to West Mersea for more walking and photography and a visit to the famous Mersea “Company Shed” for a fresh seafood lunch including the well-known Colchester Native Oyster.

The “Reminder”was at their disposal until tea-time on Sunday, when they reluctantly packed up their bags and headed back to London.
