Thames Barge Races

These races are for the crews, the highlight of the sailing season and provide the sight of up to a dozen barges sailing together in friendly but serious competition. The start is always very exciting with these large vessels being manoeuvred in close quarters trying to gain the best position. A camera is vital! Join one of our barges as it follows the racing fleet – a mixture of motoring to keep up with fast racing barges and to get the best photo positions, and setting some sail where practical.

The race course is determined on the day by the committee, but typically the outer mark may be:-

Blackwater Race – mouth of the Blackwater near Bradwell; Pin Mill Race – Harwich Harbour or Walton Pier; Thames Race – from Gravesend down river towards Southend; Colne Race – Clacton Pier.
